South Korea ranked seventh in the number of international patent applications
last year.
The nation filed for 3,521 patent applications in 2004,
trailing the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Japan and the
United States, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) said
Thursday.
The 2004 figure was up 19.3 percent from 2003 when it filed
2,947 applications, ranking seventh above Sweden.
The U.S., which ranked
first, filed for 44,264 applications, followed by Japan with 41,870.
Philips, the Netherlands-based electronics giant, ranked first among
corporate groups in the number of patent applications filed, trailed by
Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. of Japan and Siemens AG of Germany.
South Korea’s Samsung Electronics Co. and LG Electronics Inc. ranked
20th and 26th, respectively.
